Do we only use 10% of our brains?

We eat, sleep, work, play, do our business and much more! Its quite crazy how we only use 10% of our brains for this much activity. This is quite the myth. Do we really only use a small percent of our brain or is a lie. Lets pop this balloon to find out.

Where did this myth come from?

In the 20th century, Harvard psychologist, William James, wrote in 1908, that humans only use 10% of our physical and mental resources. This was where the myth was molded that we only use 10% of our brains. The idea mainly evolved from motivational speakers, self-help books, and even from sci-fi movies. Some say this myth came from the fact that our brain is 10% brain cells which have molded the myth.

Do we only use 10% of our brains

No, we don't use just 10% of our brains. MRI scans have shown that our brain is always active from sleeping to doing difficult tasks. Even if a small portion of our brain is marked the whole brain will be affected. That automatically bursts the misconception. Every part of the brain is meant for an important task. Without these parts we won't be able to function the same way we do today.

Fun facts

The brain has its own waste-clearing system (the glymphatic system) that's most active during sleep — one reason sleep matters so much. The brain itself feels no pain — it has no pain receptors. That's how surgeons can operate on a patient's brain while they're awake.
