Your mom throws you an apple while frantically saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away, finish that apple!” Now you wonder does eating an apple keep you away from the doctor and also who delivered the crate of apples. Where did this myth come from?
The saying originated from another saying back in 1886 in Wales. The saying was in a magazine called Notes & Queries. The saying back then was said to be “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you'll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” Back then medicine by doctors were not trusted. Apples were.very common and affordable back then. They were very popular which made them a common household medicine. The point of the quote is to say how the doctors “bread” is unsafe and risky while apples are or should be more trusted.
Is this myth true?
The myth is false. In 2015, the Journal of the American Medical Association tested the myth. Although, the daily apple eaters did not have a decrease in doctor visits. Apples are rich in fiber, vitamin c, potassium, and a range of antioxidants. Apples also have little to none fat and sodium. Apples are 85% water so it will keep you hydrated. An apple a day doesn't keep the doctor away yet it is one of the most simplest snacks you could eat.
